Why does society or the media only accept Black women that look "white"?

Like for example if a Black woman wants to make into the mainstream media she has to look as White as possible. If Beyonce came on TV without the blonde wear with her natural hair color and texture....would she be on TRL still? How come India Arie is never on MTV, because she looks like a Black woman and not a watered down version of one? Beyonce is Black but she changes her appearance to look more European to appeal to White, Asian, Latino and even Black men. I don't understand what is so ugly about the natural way a Black woman looks. There is nothing wrong with straigthen hair but why do we have to do in order for people to accept us and call us beautiful. Now personally I do a lot of things with my hair and it's for me. But when I see in every so called black magazine, move, video etc.. are these women with long straight hair and light skin and never natural hair or dark skin I wonder why? Yes light skin women with long hair are beautiful but so are dark ones with natural hair.

Why does society or the media only accept Black women that look "white"?

That's not necessarily true. There are many, MANY dark-skinned black women who are widely accepted by the media. In her heyday, Cicely Tyson was one of THE most sought-after black women for both TV and movie roles. Dianne Carroll was chosen to play Alexis' sister in 'Dynasty'; and Irene Cara will always be remembered as Coco on 'Fame', even though Erika Gimpel, who took over as Coco on the series, is much lighter-skinned than Irene. Queen Latifah is far from looking white, and so are supermodels Iman, Naomi Campbell and Tyra Banks. Brandy Norwood and Kelly Rowland, Beyonce's 'Destiny's Child' partner, are both dark-skinned women who are accepted by the media; Whitney Houston, Eartha Kitt and Grace Jones (who was a super-model as well as a TV legend) are all dark-skinned women who will always be remembered for their talent before their appearance. And Kimberly Elise, Loretta Devine, Lela Rochon, Tatyana Ali, Gladys Knight, Star Jones, Gabriell Union, Mo'nique, Angela Bassett and Alfre Woodard are only a few more very talented, very beautiful dark-skinned black women who, in my opinion, are just as recognizable as Halle Berry and Beyonce. As for Halle and Beyonce, I seriously doubt that they change their appearance just to look white. If that were the case, Beyonce would use blue or green contacts, bleach her skin to get rid of the darker pigment, and purposely choose movie roles that call for her to be white. On the contrary, they will be two of the first women to attest to what it's like being a black woman in a white world. I do agree that it seems that more publicity is given to lighter-skinned black women than to darker-skinned black women ... but I believe, just as strongly, that there are just as many black women - if not more - that are mainstream but for one reason or another manage to stay away from the media. It could be personal choice, I don't know; maybe the media knows better than to harass them.

My three nieces are dark-skinned, talented and beautiful. And if they ever decide that they want to get involved in the media world, they know that they have what it takes to make it big, despite how they look.

Congrats, Jewels. It was a close vote, but I think you deserved it more, anyway. Report It

Why does society or the media only accept Black women that look "white"?

Oh man com'on those are all exceptions. Ask any white person to list beautiful black women %26amp; watch the list go something like this: Beyonce

Tyra Banks

Vanessa Williams (former Ms. USA)

Halle Berry Report It

Why does society or the media only accept Black women that look "white"?

Eurocentrism. It's the same way Asians are more accepted if they look more European.

Why does society or the media only accept Black women that look "white"?

Because socitey is dumb and they dont understand beauty is skin deep.

Living in this world i don't feel beautiful at all.

Why does society or the media only accept Black women that look "white"?

Who are you to say Beyonce's apperance isn't natural. Seems very presumptive to me. That said I find natural black women like Naomi Campbell and Gabrielle Union very foxy.

Why does society or the media only accept Black women that look "white"?

The same can be said of many women of color and whites.

If you want to be accepted in hollywood you must have blond hair and big boobs.. Therefore all the dark haired women must dye their hair in order to get good roles...

Most asians are not accepted if the look too asians.

Hispanics are not accepted if they look too hispanics and even then most are given servant roles...

Indian women are not truly accepted if they are too dark...

etc..etc..etc..

So its not just black women who go through this. The world unfortuanately seem to think only whites and blacks exist therefore they seem to care less about the others I mentioned...

Why does society or the media only accept Black women that look "white"?

You ever thought that maybe those people are just acting like themselves and people like them for who they are? You strike me as the type of person who would belittle several of my friends for acting "white washed".

Black is a color, not a culture, not a heritage, nothing more. If you make more out of it than the fact that it is just a difference in skin pigmentation, then you are being a racist.

note - then how can you claim that white people are different than black people based on actions? That is what you are doing when you stated that someone is "acting white"

Why does society or the media only accept Black women that look "white"?

I'm not sure to what society you are referring. The society that I know has little in common with the media. Media is based on sensationalism and it's purpose is to make money. Not everyone belongs on The View, Jerry Springer, or CNN.

If you want to see the real society, go to the grocery store, a live sports game, or your local church. These are the real people, they are the real society.

Why does society or the media only accept Black women that look "white"?

Why are you using Beyonce as your example? She's just a pop star, (by that I mean she won't matter 20 years from now). If you think about power, influence, wealth. . . how about Oprah , Condoleeza Rice, Whoopi Goldberg, Maya Angelou.

White pop stars look just as plastic as Beyonce.

Sure, there's a long way to go for racial equality, but look how far we've come in just 100 years.

Why does society or the media only accept Black women that look "white"?

Honey, I don't have any idea what you are basing your information on.. However, Oprah was reporter for WJZ in Baltimore before she made her move to Chicago... There she wore an Afro, and is darker complected...when Good morning Chicago called her for an interview she was dark, heavy and natural...even with a perm and make up..she has never been light or blonde. There are others in the media who don't fit the "light skin blonde" image that you are talking of. I also feel that if a woman dark or light complected want to perm, straighten or dye her hair, it is her right to do so...

Way before there were "lighter" folks in the "media" there were folks like....Cicely Tyson, Hattie Mcdaniel, Esther Rolle, Bessie Smith, Pearl Bailey, Merlie Evers, Mary McLeod Bethune, and the list goes on... Just because these women who you feel are accepted because they are light...they are still BLACK!!( Lena Horne, Marian Anderson, Toni Morrison, Josephine Baker, Billie Holiday etc... all saw racism even as light complected BLACK women) Sad to say but, the world sees them as black women first...Self hate is the deepest form of racism....Stop perpetuating a stereotype...

EDITED TO SAY:: India Arie was on MTV a lot when her first album came out, and when her second album came out she was on MTV, VH1 etc.... India Arie isn't as mainstream, and POP like Beyonce...and majority of her music have A message to it, and if you aren't shaking your tail, or talking about shaking it, or some clothes, cars, rims, or someone done you a little wrong... the TRL folks don't want to hear it....

Why does society or the media only accept Black women that look "white"?

soooo since I look nothing like India Irie, I am a watered down version of a black woman... I have two black parents... I am not dark and I do have long straightened hair ... and I am as much a real black woman as a dark woman that wears her hair natural... I know that dark and lighter women are beautiful, but this "if you are light you are not a real black woman"is getting on my nerves, because it is not true. Beyonce's music is more popular than India Irie's so she is going to be shown more anyway... Lauryn Hill is another dark woman and when she was big on the scene she was shown everywhere India Irie is just not that popular

Why does society or the media only accept Black women that look "white"?

If what you're saying is true, and I don't doubt that it is to at least some extent, then follow the money to your answer. What's popular in the mainstream is that way because media executives and their advertisers have data suggesting that it's more profitable than the alternative. Popular = profitable in their business, so until someone proves them wrong, it probably won't change. If they /are/ wrong, then there's an opportunity for someone to move in and fill the demand. That's just how the free market works.

Personally, I think black women are perfectly beautiful in their natural state, and I can't be the only white guy with money to spend who thinks so.

Why does society or the media only accept Black women that look "white"?

If you'll look around, you'll also see that the democrat party does the same thing. I'm not talking about blacks who are elected to Congress, I'm talking about blacks, and there are few, who are appointed to serve in party offices by democrats. If you will take the time and do some serious research, you will find that the democrat party is one h*ll of a racist political machine who continually fools black Americans with a hand out, instead of a helping hand. With them, it isn't about helping, it's about controlling.

Why does society or the media only accept Black women that look "white"?

Well, Beyonce isn't a "Red-Bone" by any means. She's a little lighter than Gabrielle, but regardless of all the advancements, technological or other wise it's still a white persons world. All the other races (Not just black) dont get there "Well to due's" unless they succumb to some forms of white society. So depending on the career you have "You" have to decide which walk you'll take Dawtah.

But I do recognize that it is a lot easier for lite skinned sista's to quote un-quote "Get there's" than our darker skinned Dawtah's. Very sad though, it's all a sad game that we as a people play (i.e. this question) and "THE SOCIETY" (i.e. they help play us against each other) that's ultimately wants us to destroy ourselves. So until "WE" get over the lite V.S. the dark no one else will.

I had a question like this too! Check it out

Why does society or the media only accept Black women that look "white"?

First of all let me say, Great Question and one that needed to get asked.

I am sorry though I don't have an answer that might make you feel better or a solution that would make you happy. What I can say in response to the awful answers you got and for the feeling you've felt is this:

"Beauty is only skin deep, but ugly is to the bone"

Your beauty is in you question because it was sincere, your beauty is in your eyes because you see the flaws of this world, and your beauty is in you because your Lord is in your heart.

Stay strong and beautiful

Why does society or the media only accept Black women that look "white"?

The media only accepts women that look White , not society ( as in real people ) , you said it yourself and I quote '' Yes light skin women with long hair are beautiful but so are dark ones with natural hair '' , in other words everybody is beautiful in their own way , Asians , Caucasians , Indians , Latinos , Black , Mixed , etc

Bottom line is don't listen to the media ( ignore them ) , it's just like that same crap that a woman has to be light haired ( ex : blond , redhead ) , have light eyes , pale skin to be seen as feminine or beautiful

P.S. Women of Color in general are attacked , not just Dark Skinned Black Women

Why does society or the media only accept Black women that look "white"?

Your question is a deep one and lies at the core of all the dilemmas and conundrums that baffle the minds of our greatest thinkers.

Why would one human being kick another in the face and shoot him/her in the head BECAUSE OF THE HUE OF HIS/HER EPIDERMIS? Why?

What are the roots of racial discrimination and all the open and hidden defense mechanisms that each individual constructs for his survival?

You said; 'I don't understand what is so ugly about the natural way a Black woman looks.'

Well, I wonder who is judging and also when you say; 'Why does society or the media only accept Black women that look "white"?' I want to ask whose 'society', whose 'media'?

Races should define themselves. No race should set a definition on another. All external definitions are limitations. Prison walls.

Essentially, as a person, as an individual, mind your business and try to live in such a way that, you would be at peace with yourself and with all other persons.

Dr. Maulana Karenga says it eloquently:

'In the final analysis, this requires the bringing into being a just and good society and the creation of a context for maximum human freedom and human flourishing. Indeed, it is only in such a context that we can truly begin to repair and heal ourselves, our injuries, return fully to our own history, live free, full, meaningful and productive lives and bring into being the good world we all want and deserve to live in.'

Why does society or the media only accept Black women that look "white"?

Because some people do not like to see the real African look ,or black people who like themselves and not wanting to change for others who do not like the look. I think people should start liking people for who they are and stop judging.

Why does society or the media only accept Black women that look "white"?

You should watch this interview on the Tyra Banks' show:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=kQ7XSIi3kAs

Tyra talks about black women and straight light hair and asian women with eyelid surgery.

A plastic surgeon on the show says that "there seems to be a Europeanization of beauty standards"...

For example, Indian Bollywood actress/beauty pageant winner Aishwarya Rai has what can be considered "white" features (light skin and blue-green eyes..)and she is considered among the most pretty

Beyonce has light brown skin and light hair:

Mexican singer Belinda Peligro is extremely popular and has "white" features (light hair, pale skin, blue eyes..)

Stop denying black women the right to look white. Sounds like you're jealous of Beyonce.
